One of the biggest surprises for me personally in my attempts to learn about East Union Twp was the discovery that Apple Creek was home to a Miss Ohio in the Miss America contest! Miss Diane Howell was a 1947 graduate of Apple Creek High School and was just finishing up her teaching degree at Baldwin Wallace College when she and some friends were encouraged to enter the Miss WWST radio contest in Wooster. Diane was shocked that she had won and that qualified her for the Miss Ohio contest held later in Geneva on the Lake which she also won. Our picture this month is Diane on her float in the parade of States that was held in Atlantic City New Jersey as a part of the Miss America contest. Diane said that the dress that she is wearing was made by a Cleveland dress maker and was part of her prizes, however it was made too small for her to wear in competition and could only be worn while sitting down (unzipped in the back). Diane competed in a dress that came from Beulah Bechtel’s in Wooster. The day after the pageant, her parents drove her back all night to Avon Lake Ohio where class jr. high students were eagerly waiting for their new teacher. Miss Utah may have been crowned that year (1951), but Diane Howell Gordon is a winner in my book for the person that she is!
